Greek is the official language of the country, but English is spoken by most people.
The Greek language has a long and well-documented history —the longest of any Indo-European language— spanning 34 centuries. It belongs to the Hellenic branch of the Indo-European language family and is spoken by about 12 million people mainly in Greece and Cyprus.
The Greek alphabet has 24 letters and has enjoyed an extraordinary success as a direct or indirect model for other alphabets (notably the Latin and the Cyrillic alphabets); on it are based the writing systems employed in a great part of the modern world.
